Hair and Handwriting!

Look at our whacky hair! We had Whacky hair day on Thursday to raise money for Ronald McDonald House. It was heaps of fun!

If you have been to our class this term, you may have noticed our new name tags, where we write our names each day on the whiteboard. We are learning how to make each letter the right size, and to sit the letters on the line.  The 'ground, grass sky' cards to help us 'see' where the letters go.  Here are Sacha and Cooper's names before and after learning how to use the cards.  Can you see the difference?  Great work!

Week 5

What a busy term it has been so far!  We are learning how to create, and reflect on our creations to make them better.

We have been busy at action stations this week.  Here are some pictures of children busy with their learning.
"We are busy learning how to write curly caterpillar letters" said Joseph (like o,c,a,d,g...)

Hadlee creating a butterfly.  We have a lot of different designs using the same materials.  How can we improve our creations and make them better?

We are loving being in charge of collecting the Meadow Fresh promotion stickers for our school.  We have made boxes to collect the stickers in, posters and of course stuck in and counted the stickers.  The children have loved visiting the other classes to 'promote' the stickers.  Don't forget to send yours to school!  The more stickers we collect, the more art and P.E gear we will earn for our school!
Sticking the stickers onto the sheets.
Writing messages so others know what to do.  Maybe we'll share them in assembly!

We are learning some dance moves as we get ready to create our production dance.  Here is our 'dance' poem this week, and here we are practising some dance verbs.  Can you see move at different levels-tall, medium and low?

People Who Help Us

Today the ASB team came to school to offer a sausage sizzle to help raise money for the St John's Ambulance. Some of us dressed up as doctors, nurses, firemen or police. These people work so hard to help our community every day!

The Planets

We have been learning about the planets this week and their orbit around the earth. We know a great song to help us remember the names. All the planets orbit the sun. Earth takes one whole year to go all the way around the sun. Everyday, it rotates around, giving us night and day. It takes 1 day and 1 night (24 hours) to do 1 rotation. Today, we illustrated the song by colouring, cutting and sticking the planets in order. We had to look carefully at the sounds in the planet names and use the labelling skills we have been practicing to help us. "What colour are the planets?" we wondered. Luckily, we found an i-pad app about the solar system to help us discover what they were. We think planet Earth has the best colours!

The Jump Song

As we explore more about the earth and the sun, we have been wondering what it might be like to be in space. Here is a fun song we have been dancing to to warm us up on cold days. Maybe you could warm up at home too!

Week 4

This week we welcomed Ollie Speight to school and to our Kauri classroom. He has his big brother Matthew to help him along with all the smiling faces behind him. We hope has a good time learning with us all. Certificates - Riley for being a caring and thoughtful person and Rafferty for keep trying even when it gets hard.

The Sun

Our inquiry this term is about how we get day and night.  We have been finding out this week about the sun. Did you know the sun is a star?  We could fit a million earth's into the sun.  The sun stays in the middle and we go around the sun. Here is our song about the sun.

Week 2, Term 2

Kauri kids have been working so hard "at writing" said Katy, "at reading" said Emily Soper, "on self-improvement" said Hadlee, "on maths games" said Joseph, and "running around the field" said Cooper. We have begun training for cross-county each day so please check your child has suitable foot ware for this. Certificates were awarded to our new children in assembly on Friday for the fantastic start they have made to school - Joseph, Katy, Emily, Max and Keely. They are all getting very good at learning new routines. We are noticing how settled they are especially before school as they read yesterdays book to each other on the mat. Kapai.

Kauri Kids 'hopping' out the sounds in their spelling words.

Welcome back to Term 2

Welcome back to Term 2.  We are very happy to welcome Mrs Forde back to school, and also our 5 new children Max, Katy, Joseph, Keeley and Emily.

We are enjoying getting to know our new teacher and our new action stations.  Here we are in action!
"We are playing bingo.  We are learning to read words." said Hamish.

"I am doing a certificate.  I am practicing writing"  said Greer.'

"We were matching the puzzles up.  We are learning to read numbers and put them in order" said Madeleine.  What super learners we have in Kauri!  We are looking forward to a busy and exciting term.

Term 1!

Wow, Term 1 went so fast!  What a busy and exciting term we had.  Here are some highlights.

Our inquiry was about working well together.  We learned and practiced some strategies for working together in groups, like participating, sharing, taking turns and listening to others.

We love Action Stations in Kauri.  Action Stations are learning opportunities set up around the classroom during our literacy time.  We can choose which ones to work at.  We do a lot of thinking and talking about our learning at the stations, with questions like "How do I know I am learning?",  "How did somebody else help me learn?" and "How can I get better at this?'.

One of the favourites this term was a construction activity using balls and sticks.  At the beginning of the term the children were keen to make all sorts of individual creations like...
An umbrella!

Soon we began to discover we could make great creations by working together, listening to each other and helping.  Then we had creations like castles, forts and swimming pools!  Great working together Kauri Kids!

Fill a bucket!

What we do or say to others can help 'fill their bucket' and make them feel good!  Check out this link to the story we shared.  Have you filled a bucket today?

"I let my mum rush to work" said Hadlee.
"I smiled at somebody" said Ethan.
"I smiled at my Mum" said Niah.
"I gave Peanut a pat" said Abigail.
"I smiled at my Mum" said Rafferty.
"I did good batting" said Hamish.
"I smiled at my Dad" said Charlotte.
"I patted my dog" said Jabari.
"I gave Lily a hug and a kiss before I came to school" said Tayla.
"I watered my grandma's plants" said Ben.

Welcome!

Welcome back to 2013! We are excited to return to school to our new classroom, all eager to get learning! We are already welcoming new school visitors to our class each week. What a great bunch of leaders we will have showing the new children the ropes! I will aim to put up some links to games over the next week or two that are a fun way to practice literacy and numeracy skills at home, so come back and visit our blog soon!

Here is a poem we had fun with in week 1. Can you say the maori command that matches the picture?
E Tu!
E tu, stand up
E Noho, sit down
E moe, go to sleep
Ka pai, choice!
E oho, wake up
E tu, stand up
Kani kani, lets jive...
Ka pai, choice!
